HiSilicon Technologies Corporation, which develops single-chip systems, communication networks and digital technologies, is a subsidiary of Huawei. The company produces Kirin processors which installed in the smartphones of the Chinese giant. Only in 2017, the share of gadgets with Kirin chips amounted to 173 million. It is noteworthy that in the budget models of cell phones Honor and Huawei, the company installs SoC Qualcomm. The models which focused on mid-budget and high market segments have always been equipped with single-chip Kirin processors.
After the event in Bangalore, journalists were able to talk with the Manager of Huawei Business Group. A question was asked about Kirin chips and the possibility of selling them to competing smartphone manufacturers. The representative of the company said that Kirin chips are the intellectual property, not a way of earning. In addition, it is noted that the devices are an advantage over other brands. It follows that Huawei is not going to sell its processors to the third-party developers.
It is worth noting that the first mobile processor developed using a 7-nm process was presented at the IFA 2018. Kirin 980 received an increased number of transistors (6.9 billion), 8 productive cores (4 Cortex-A76, 4 Cortex-A55) and a 10-core graphics accelerator Mali-G76. The processor has got support for LPDDR4X 2133 MHz memory, as well as machine learning technology. The first smartphone using Kirin 980 will be presented on October 16.
